This wonderful Rolwaling Valley walk in Nepal’s Gaurishankar Conservation Area (GCA) is a fairly demanding teahouse trek tucked between Langtang National Park and Khumbu (Mt. Everest). It is a section of The Great Himalaya Trail. The Rolwaling Valley trip is a less traveled and more peaceful trekking path that goes parallel to Tibet. Beding, the main town in the Rolwaling Valley, is a three-day walk from Gonghar Khola. This trek can be combined with Everest crossing Tashi Lapcha La (5755m); nevertheless, basic climbing skills and skilled guides are required to complete this and another Pachermo Peak Climbing permit. Tsho Rolpa (4580m) is one of Nepal’s greatest glacial lakes. If this is the point of no return,
Direct local buses run from Kathmandu to Singati. Local buses only leave in the morning at 6 and 8 A.M. We could also take a local bus to Charikot and then another bus to Singati. You’ll need to spend the night in Singati before catching a bus to Gongkar Khola the next morning. On the client’s request, Wilderness Excursion can provide 4WD private jeeps. The package price we have offered solely includes local bus transportation. The walk begins in Gonghar Khola, 17 kilometers north of Singati. We’ll have to see if the bus comes all the way here. On a dirt road, the journey takes about 8 to 10 Hours.
Today, after breakfast, we take a local bus to Jagat, which is about 196 kilometers east of Kathmandu and takes 9-10 hours through Lamosangu (750m.) and Charikot (1980m.). Spend the night in Jagat in a lodge or a homestay.
This isn’t a long day, but it’s a hot and steep climb. You begin heading north up the new road as you leave Gongar. After around 45 minutes, you’ll arrive at Chetchet, a collection of houses on the right side of the road. You exit the road at this point and follow the route that leads down into Chetchet. After around ten minutes, you’ll arrive at the Tamakoshi River bridge. You begin climbing as soon as you cross. Continue on the trail until you reach the charming village of Simigaon. The lodges are on the ridge at the top of the hamlet, so you still have around 40 minutes of walking through the village before you arrive.
Starting from Simigaon, take the trail that leads to the other side of the ridge and up the Rolwaling river valley. The most of the day will be spent walking through a forest, but the path is rather clear, and if you stick to the main track, there is little danger of getting lost. You’ll notice two little shacks after approximately an hour of ups and downs. This is a good spot to rehydrate because you’ll only be ascending from here and there won’t be many opportunities to replenish along the road. You enter a Rhododendron forest from here and begin ascending. It’s a really steep ascent that takes around two and a half hours.
This is also a day-long ascent, and due to the altitude difference, it may be the most difficult day of the walk. Despite what most maps show, the wooden bridge crossing from Dongang has been out of service since 2010, and there is a new bridge up the valley. As you leave Dongang, follow the main trail north, past the admonishing NMA sign (“no one gains from illegal mountaineering. Stop doing it right now.” You arrive at a bridge after approximately two hours and cross the Rolwaling Khola. The valley begins to open up from here, and you get some beautiful views of Chekigo (6257m). After about an hour, you encounter the Themlung Khola, which flows straight down from
Altitude can be a significant trek-killer if not taken seriously. A day to acclimate is strongly advised. Beding is a charming hamlet with some wonderful acclimatization walks around it. A large rock marked with prayer flags on the mountainside in front of the settlement serves as a beautiful viewpoint with excellent views of Gaurishankar’s north face and adjacent peaks. There is no apparent path up, and you will have to pass some shrubs to get there. A little Gompa is also nicely built into the cliff above the town. Both are around 4000m, thus they can be decent options for acclimatization walks. It is feasible to take a side journey up from Beding.
This day is heavily reliant on how well you acclimatized. This hike should not be difficult if you are sufficiently acclimatized. If you are unsure or want to cut your day short, you can go up to the lake the next morning and then continue down from Na. The trail from Beding is well-marked, and this section of the journey is breathtaking. As you ascend, the valley progressively expands up, changing from a V-shaped valley to a U-shaped valley. The valley’s sides are covered in icefalls and waterfalls, and there are no trees at this point, just grassland and a few Juniper bushes here and there. You arrive in the settlement after around two hours.
This is the day you begin your descent, following the same path you used to ascend. Those of you who want to go up to Dadlung La should turn right after Niyamare at the bridge.
Still following the same path back. Request that the lodge owners arrange your bus ticket to Kathmandu for the following morning.
We take a lengthy day trip to Kathmandu by local bus. The bus travel to Kathmandu could take up to 11 hours.
